Apple Says Bendy iPhones Are “Rare”

Meanwhile, Brand Jokes Add Fuel to the #Bendgate Fire

News across the world is buzzing after iPhone 6 owners showed us how their new gadget has bent after being carried in trouser pockets without a case. Several of Apple’s smartphone competitors have helped fuel the fire by adding to #bendgate with their own brand jokes.

Apple has said there have only been nine cases of bent iPhones, so the whole things seems a bit blown out of proportion. In a statement, the tech giant explained that their phones had been designed with “anodised aluminium, which is tempered for extra strength” as well as aluminium and titanium for extra reinforcement, report the BBC.

Apple’s statement also noted that “We also perform rigorous tests throughout the entire development cycle. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus meet or exceed all of our high quality standards to endure everyday, real life use. With normal use a bend in iPhone is extremely rare and through our first six days of sale, a total of nine customers have contacted Apple with a bent iPhone 6 Plus.”

Whether this bending will affect the new iPhone’s software is yet to be determined. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have both been released with Apple Pay, the company’s flashy new mobile payment system. This works using an NFC chip which allows contactless payments to be made with compatible terminals. Apple Pay has partnered with several big retail names in the US, including Whole Foods, McDonalds and Nike. If the iPhone were to bend at the point where the chip is placed, there could be serious consequences for Apple Pay fans.

The NFC properties of the iPhone 6 will be discussed in more depth at the upcoming Mobile Payments Briefing in London on November 20th. Download the brochure here for more details.
