Rogers’ Suretap NFC Payments Arrives on Android and BlackBerry 10

Rogers Suretap NFC payments roll out to new devices

Rogers' Suretap NFC Payments platform has finally rolled out onto BlackBerry 10 and some Android devices this week.

Having already arrived in Canada late last year, the tap-happy payment platform was limited by poor app usage, lack of compatibility across devices and only a slim picking of places to use the payment method.

Now though, Suretap has begun expanding its offering by allowing banks, loyalty and reward programmes to develop mobile payment solutions on Android and BlackBerry 10 devices that make use of a secure SIM and NFC technology.

Now Android phones like the LG Optimus G and Samsung's Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II can be used to make payments. As well as the BlackBerry Z10, Bold 9900, Curve 9360 and Bold 9790.

The tech also works across all MasterCard PayPass and Visa PayWave terminals across Canada.

“To continue driving adoption and growth of mobile payments in Canada, it is essential that a strong ecosystem is established to include multiple devices, operating systems and payment networks,” said Rogers' VP of Transaction Services Jeppe Dorff.

“We know our customers have strong affinity to the Android platform and we are thrilled to include Android devices amongst smartphones ready to support mobile payment applications built for suretap.”

Krista Napier, IDC Canada's Senior Analyst for Mobility, added: “The Android operating system holds the largest share of smartphone unit shipments in Canada and in North America today.

“Because of Android’s market presence, and Canadians’ growing usage of smartphones for many of their daily activities, there is growth potential for mobile payment solutions being offered to Canadians on the Android platform.”

Do you think betting on a future of NFC is the right thing to do?

Does Rodgers need to roll out Suretap technology faster than they already are?
