As NFC continues to enter the retail marketing, the Wall Street Journal recently announced that not only are issuers getting on board the contactless train, but merchants are as well, with companies like Walmart and Target working on their own mobile payments platform.

While it's certainly encouraging that so many organizations, both issuers and merchants are embracing this new technology, the question arises – how will they be compatible? Are we going from a wallet full of cards to a phone full of payment options? Will customers be forced to download 8 different applications to coincide with each individual payment system?
If that becomes the case, is NFC really making life easier for consumers or just slightly more technologically advanced?
